We are looking forward to hearing our Keynote Speakers, Deondra and Desirae Brown at our upcoming luncheon!

Desirae and Deondra Brown have performed over 500 concerts across the United States and around the world as soloists, duo pianists, and members of the piano chamber group, The 5 Browns. They are exclusive Steinway Artists and have released six albums, three of which were #1 on the Billboard Classical charts. As victims of sexual abuse by their father, Deondra and Desirae Brown, founders of the Foundation for Survivors of Abuse, will discuss the importance of not letting challenges defeat you and facing the future with optimism and happiness. The Brown sisters will address how you can find yourself, your own voice, and lasting strength even in the most difficult of circumstances.

The sisters received their training at The Juilliard School in New York City and have performed in numerous venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium. Desirae and Deondra, as members of The 5 Browns, have garnered extensive media coverage, including appearances on The Tonight Show, Oprah, Good Morning America, The Today Show, The View, and NPR’s Performance Today.

Desirae and Deondra have also formed the non-profit, The Foundation for Survivors of Abuse (FSA), to help create a face for victims of sexual abuse everywhere. They are collaborating with notable lawyer and abuse activist, Marci Hamilton. The sisters have worked closely with lawmakers across the isle to promote the passage of legislation in Utah requiring child sexual abuse prevention be taught in elementary schools. They received the Hate Breakers award from New Conscience, Inc. along with awards from The Heritage School of Utah (providers of education in a safe environment for teenagers from troubled homes), The Family Support Center of Utah, and Rape Crisis Center of Utah. Deondra serves as co-chair of the Utah Coalition for Protecting Childhood, alongside Brent Platt of the Division of Child and Family Services and as a member of the “Champions Committee” for Prevent Child Abuse Utah.

They are also working with The Utah Division of Child and Family Services and the Utah Attorney General’s office as spokespersons for the media campaign, One With Courage Utah, to encourage the reporting of sex abuse crimes. The sisters are involved in a nationwide media campaign highlighting the problem of sexual abuse and promoting victims’ rights.

ChildBuilders Advisory Council Luncheon May 26, 2016

Dr. Christopher Greeley, Texas Children’s Hospital, will be presenting on a newly created and innovative Section of Public Health Pediatrics (SPHP). Under his leadership, SPHP was formed in recognition that complex family and community forces play a large role in the health and wellbeing of the children who receive care at Texas Children’s Hospital.

SPHP presents a unique opportunity to help expand the reach of the Texas Children’s Hospital community into a forward leaning and engaged role within the Greater Houston community.  Some areas of focus of the Section of Public Health Pediatrics will include: child abuse and neglect, violence (community, peer and in-home), poverty and inequality, the role of education, mental health (both in children and parents), parent support and education, and access to health care.

ChildBuilders Quarterly Learning Series LuncheonSeptember 30, 2015

Statistics show that just 20 percent of Texas eighth graders will earn post-high school credentials within six years of graduation, while 10 percent of low income and minority children will achieve this. Even worse, only 5 percent of minority males will earn a degree. In order to change these statistics, we must completely rethink the basic assumptions around K-12 education. Many parents believe that their child’s education is the responsibility of the school, and it is not their place to interfere. If you ask any teacher, they will tell you how much they need the parent’s leadership. Without it, behavioral, academic, and social problems become routine and schools suffer.

The Educational Makeover empowers parents to take ownership of their child’s education and, by doing so, will provide all children the opportunity to reach their God-given potential.

Join ChildBuilders at Maggiano’s for our next Quarterly Luncheon to learn about The Educational Makeover.

Presented by Matt Barnes, CEO and Founder
