Lesson Objectives
- Distinguish between spanking and physical abuse.
- Understand that assertiveness sometimes means getting away quickly and safely and telling a safe grown-up you trust.
- Identify safe grown-ups you trust and can tell when you need help.
- Recognize the need for a family safety plan.
Materials & Preparation
- Puppets: Panda, Puppy, Tiger, Penguin, and Lamb (optional).
- Playdough, Styrofoam, or shoe box to hold puppets.
- Stand Strong • Stay Safe Rules Poster.
- Black or blue dry-erase markers and eraser (optional). To make the difference between spanking and abuse more concrete, use black or blue Expo marker to show the lasting nature of the marks on Puppy.
- Home Connection 4: Family Safety Plan, one copy for demonstration during the lesson and one for each student to take home.
